The West Baton Rouge Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibition and publication entitled Juke Joint Men. The exhibit features the collages of local bluesmen by J K Lawson and the musically inspired metal sculptures of Port Allen native Ronald Trahan.
John K Lawson is a native of Birmingham, England who now resides in south Louisiana. Known for his colorful collages and other mixed media art, Lawson has been featured in Country Roads Magazine and his work commissioned by numerous festivals across the state. After attending an event at the museum’s juke joint, John agreed to do a book highlighting local Blues legends with the West Baton Rouge Museum. The result is a series of collages and biographies of Blues musicians from the Westside of the river.
Ronald Trahan is a nationally known sculptor who is on the Artist Roster of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. He sculpts in bronze using a welding process to create figures inspired by childhood visits to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. His jazz musician and second line dance sculptures have been highly sought after at the New Orleans Jazz Fest for decades.

BiographyJohn K. Lawson was born in Birmingham, England, in and raised mostly in the countryside until his family moved to South London when he was a young teenager. He first came to America on a student exchange program in engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. There his artistic abilities were encouraged, and he returned to England two years later to concentrate on landscape painting.Eventually, Lawson was drawn back to the Deep South, and soon became part of an underground art culture in New Orleans that included working in tattoo, T-shirt and mural designs long before these mediums became mainstream. Lawson also became known for his unique drawing style and creations using discarded Mardi Gras beads. He covered mannequins, pianos, and drums with intricate bead work, including a fifty-three-foot-long bar top at the notorious artists’ haven, the Audubon Hotel.
Since Hurricane Katrina, Lawson divides his time between studios in New York City and Great Barrington.

Biography
I was always very good at drawing from a very young age and remember early on that I wanted to be an artist, although I never really understood what that really meant. Being born in Albury I’ve always been drawn to the Australian landscape and the outdoors in general. I recall riding up the hill behind our house and being able to see an endless horizon line and I remember how the light glistened across the land like sparkles of magic. It had me in complete awe and from an early age I enjoyed experiencing the different seasons.
Entering the National Art School straight out of high school for three years was definitely an eye opener for me and my practical training was completed with an intensive 6 months at the Julian Ashton Art School during my mid-twenties, where I really learnt about colour and composition. The two very differing schools and their approach to painting honed my abilities to handle paint, composition and colour.
I currently spend most of my time exploring dirt roads in rural NSW, where painting from life has played a critical role in shaping my current style and approach to painting. I rewo
