A selection of gorgeous paintings by San Jose-based artist Samuel Rodriguez (some digital, some traditional). Inspired by the duality of the contemporary moment — that is, the hybridization of our material world with a technological one — Rodriguez explores the rise in cultural exchange that has arisen from greater tech use and globalization:
I think of my works as landscape paintings, except my observations consist of language, and culture – in the same way someone would render a physical landscape I render cultural ones. I’m observing the cultural metaphorical landscape.
Sam has recently started a Youtube channel offering a peek into his digital process, so if youve got an iPad Pro and Procreate you should definitely check his videos. See more of Sams work below.

Sam Rodriguez explores cultural hybridity and identity through a plurality of mediums
San Jose artist Sam Rodriguez doesnt fit neatly into any one particular category. You cant look at his body of work and say, Oh, hes a graffiti muralist, or Oh, he makes mixed-media pop art, or even, Oh, hes an editorial illustrator. Because he does all of those things (and more).
For Rodriguez, the variety of his art reflects the hybridity of his identity; and, by extension, the hybridity of the American cultural identity.
Rodriguez is Mexican-American. Growing up, in all of the neighborhoods he lived in and schools he went to, all of the other kids were also Latino. In American culture, all Latinos tend to get clumped into one category, yet within Latino communities there are incredible variations, with so many similarities yet also, he emphasizes, so many differences between them. Rodriguez also experienced an ethno-cultural identity crisis: visiting Mexico as a child he wasnt considered Mexican enough because it wasnt on his birth certificate, yet in America he was automatically considered (and dismissed as) Mexican.

As a youth, he dedicated his time painting Graffiti until later pursuing a BFA in Illustration at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. He has since built his career as an illustrator, developing a style that blends facial features, lettering, and abstract shapes to formulate distinct visual narratives. Color plays a big role in how we feel, and I try to capture a sense of warmth through my palette. In addition, I try to show the essence of a person through facial expression, features, and body language. I blend faces, figures, lettering, and abstract shapes to formulate distinct visual narratives. There are endless possibilities with this approach and it always surprises me to see the results. Nouns are what I call my Portraits. They are closeups that focus on faces, places and objects. As mentioned be
