Manchester Palaeontologist Goes to Hollywood

A palaeontologist from the University of Manchester, Dr Dean Lomax is off to Hollywood. Dr Lomax will be walking the red carpet as a new documentary film entitled &#;Why Dinosaurs?&#; is premiered. As the lead expert for the project and executive producer, Dr Lomax has been instrumental in helping to bring to the screen this ground-breaking exploration of our fascination with the Dinosauria.

Why Dinosaurs?

Dean is a world-renowned palaeontologist and an Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Manchester. He helped father and son team, Tony and James Pinto realise their dream of making a dinosaur documentary. The premier, being held in Hollywood on November 3rd will be a star-studded affair. Dean very kindly offered us tickets to attend this exciting event. Unfortunately, we are unable to go, ironically in part, as we have on-going projects with students from Manchester.

Dean helped shape the scientific narrative and assisted first-time filmmakers James and Tony with their innovative production.

He explained:

“This film is for everyone who ever played with dinosaurs as a kid, wanted to be a palaeontologist and di

 "Never stop following your passion"

The short version

Like many people, my passion for palaeontology stems from a childhood fascination with everything dinosaur. However, my career has taken an unconventional route. Most would-be palaeontologists tend to study the subject (or similar) at university, but I did not have the grades or the finances to do so. Instead, at 18, I sold many of my possessions to fund a trip to excavate dinosaurs in America, then immersed myself in research and writing scientific papers and books.

Despite my initial self-taught status, over the years, my academic research was recognised at such a high standard that I became affiliated with The University of Manchester as a ‘Visiting Scientist’ in I then completed a postgraduate MPhil degree and eventually a PhD in palaeontology, despite not having an undergraduate degree. For somebody self-taught, from a poor background and who didn’t even pass his A-levels, I like to think that my journey is quite remarkable and that it hopefully inspires others to pursue their dreams.

Here's a short documentary about my career, presented

The Artists Who Paint Dinosaurs

I have a theory about why kids love dinosaurs. You might think it’s their size, their ferocity, the number and sharpness of their teeth. It is all of these things, but it is something else, too.

Dinosaurs are remote from us in time. They belong to an alien realm. They ruled this planet for more than million years, the longest such reign ever achieved by Earth’s megafauna. We know this because their bones froze into stone, and became fossils. But the dinosaurs left only a few of these remains, and they are, after all, mostly skeletal.

Everything else must be pieced together, or imagined.

A dinosaur is a muse, then. To contemplate a dinosaur is to slip from the present, to travel in time, deep into the past, to see the Earth as it was tens, if not hundreds, of millions of years ago, when the continents were nearer, when the forests and oceans teemed with strange plants and creatures. In childhood, the mind is alive to the thrill of that perspective shift.

And in adulthood, too, which is why there is an entire genre of art dominated by dinosaurs. Paleo art, it is called, and it has a sophisticated critical following. There are coffee-table books

When Dean Mitchell decided to leave his basement studio in the Kansas City suburbs and move back to Florida where he grew up, he was looking for a place with more natural light—and also seeking a better balance between his work and personal life. “I actually wanted a personal life,” he says with a laugh.

“Working in an aesthetically pleasing environment is very important to me,” says the artist. In his travels around the country, he has always enjoyed “scrounging around” for sculpture and antique pieces to furnish his studio.

He chose the furnishings because he liked their design but also because they’re functional—they store his art materials, including oil (Old Holland) and watercolor paints (Winsor &#; Newton, Grumbacher, American Journey). S
