Sly &#; Robbie are a prolific Jamaican rhythm section and production duo, associated primarily with the reggae and dub genres. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare teamed up in the mids after establishing themselves separately in Jamaica as professional musicians. Sly and Robbie are estimated to have played on or produced , recordings, many of them on their own label, Taxi Records.
Biography
Sly Dunbar, then drumming for Skin Flesh and Bones, and Robbie Shakespeare, playing bass and guitar with the Aggrovators, discovered they had the same ideas about music in general (both are huge fans of Motown, Stax Records, the Philly Sound, and country music, in addition to Jamaican legendary labels Studio One and Treasure Isle), and reggae production in particular. They first worked together with The Revolutionaries for the newly created Channel One studio and label, operated by the Hoo Kim brothers.
According to The Independent, their breakthrough album was The Mighty Diamonds’ release ‘Right Time’, which helped to establish them as the “masters of groove and propulsion.” The drum beat on the title song

Robbie Shakespeare — the bassist, producer, and half of powerhouse duo Sly & Robbie — has died. He was Shakespeare died in a Florida hospital after undergoing kidney surgery, according to the Jamaica Gleaner. As the bassist of Sly & Robbie, Shakespeare not only created their own music label and produced their own albums, they also provided backing instruments for the likes of Mick Jagger, Joe Cocker, and Robert Palmer, and Grace Jones. It’s Shakepeare’s funky bass you can hear in Jones’ iconic “Pull Up to the Bumper.” Rolling Stonelisted him as the 17th greatest bassist of all time.
Shakespeare was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He met drummer Sly Dunbar at Channel One Studio (per Stereogum). They quickly hit it off and started both Sly & Robbie and Taxi Records. Sly & Robbie were in high demand as session musicians, working with Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and more. He died in Florida where he had recently been in hospital for kidney surgery, the Jamaica Gleaner reports.
The prolific bassist and music producer is credited with revolutionising the sound of reggae and dancehall music.
Jamaica's Culture Minister Olivia Grange announced his death and said Shakespeare was one of the country's great musicians.
"[Sly and Robbie] took bass playing and drumming to the highest level as they made music for themselves as a group, and for many other artistes locally and internationally," she said in a statement.
BBC Radio 1Xtra reggae music presenter David Rodigan said Shakespeare "played his bass guitar like nobody else".

巨星堕つ━━レゲエ界を代表するベーシスト、ロビー・シェイクスピアが音楽界に残した偉業はあまりにも大きい。彼とドラマーのスライ・ダンバーから成るユニット＝スライ＆ロビーは、“世界最強のリズム・セクション”と呼ばれ、リズム体としては世界で最も知られた存在だ。彼らはレゲエのみならず、ロック、ポップス、ジャズと多様なミュージシャンに起用され、これまでに残した膨大なレコーディング曲数はなんと20万を超えている。幸運にも筆者は幾度かロビーに取材する機会に恵まれた。饒舌に語るスライとは対照的に、ロビーはいつも口数は少ない。だが、語る言葉の多くは本質的だったことを今でも強烈に覚えている。なぜならそれは、ロビーのプレイ・スタイルそのものであるからだ。
