Widely referred to as the &#;Father of Black History&#;, Carter Godwin Woodson was a notable African American historian who played a pivotal role in identifying and preserving the history and accomplishments of African Americans. Born to former slaves, the Virginia-born historian overcame early hardships, working as a miner and sharecropper, and remained committed to education.

Carter Woodson is Notable.

Carter Godwin Woodson was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History as one of the first scholars to study African-American history. In February he launched the celebration of "Negro History Week," which is the precursor of Black History Month.[1]

Carter Woodson was born in in Virginia.[2][3] His parents were James Woodson and Anne Riddle. Both of his parents were once enslaved in Buckingham County, his father and grandfather by a man named John W. Toney. [4]

Woodson had to put off schooling while he worked in the coal mines of West Virginia.[5] He graduated from Berea College, and became a teacher and school administrator. He gained graduate degrees at the University of Chicago and in , was the second African-American, after W. E. B. DuBois

Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson is known as the &#;Father of Black History&#; for his role in founding what is now Black History Month and the seeds for many of his later-life insights would be sewn right here in the Jewel City of Huntington, West Virginia. Dr. Woodson was born December 19, in New Canton, Virginia, to parents who had been slaves before Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. His father, James Woodson, had worked diligently for the Union during the Civil War. The elder Woodson moved his family to West Virginia when he heard that Huntington was building a high school for Black students.

The Woodson family was large and had limited resources, so Carter could only attend school very infrequently. But that didn’t stop the young Woodson. Through self-instruction, he managed to master all of the fundamentals of the “common school subjects” by the age of

Who Was Carter G. Woodson?

Known as the “Father of Black History,” Carter G. Woodson dedicated his career to the field of African American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide commemoration. He was the second Black American to receive a doctorate from Harvard, after W.E.B. Du Bois. Woodson wrote many historical works, including the influential book The Mis-Education of the Negro. He died in , a quarter-century before President Gerald Ford recognized the first Black History Month.
