Neely Tucker was born on November 26, , in a small town in Holmes County, Mississippi, called Lexington. His parents are Elizabeth Betty Tucker and Duane Tucker, a local assistant county agent of the Cooperative Extension Service which helps farmers with crop and livestock problems. He has one brother Duane, Jr., who is nicknamed Shane (Tucker 10, 11).
The family moved to a farm outside of Starkville, Mississippi, and Neely was enrolled in Starkville Academy, a private school in Starkville (Tucker 13). While there, Tucker wrote for the school newspaper and played high school football . Ironically, writing wasnt his focus. Instead, football was the center of his attention. He graduated from the Academy in and enrolled at Mississippi State University in Starkville. Today, that child is named Chipo Katherine Tucker. An effervescent seven-year- old, she is the Tucker’s only child.
Tucker was born in rural Mississippi at the dawn of the Civil Rights movement in the poorest, most predominantly black county in the poorest, most predominantly black state in America. He attended an all-white school, left the Deep South and later married the girl next-door in downtown Detroit – Vita Griffin, a black woman 11 years his senior. They adopted Chipo against overwhelming odds while Tucker was declared, as a foreign correspondent, to be an “enemy of the state†while based in Zimbabwe.
Tucker explored these issues in Love in the Driest Season, a memoir that was named the Inspirational Memoir of the Year by the Books for a Better Life Foundation. It was named one of the best 25 books published that year by the American Booksellers Associatio
