Hannie made close friends with two Jewish women, Philine Polak and Sonja Frenck, when she was studying law as an undergraduate in Amsterdam, which led her, at barely 19, to begin acting out against fascism. When Germany invaded the Netherlands, all university students were required to sign a petition in support of the German occupation. Hannie refused to sign and was forced to leave school &#; the catalyst for further involvement in the resistance. She moved in with her parents and began helping Jews who were in hiding by providing them with IDs and food.

A sub group of the Raad Van Verzet killed a farmer in Velsen without authorization from the Raad Van Verzet leaders. Hannie gave a list of the names of the people who killed the farmer to the Raad Verzet leaders, and all the people listed were turned over

Het levensverhaal van Hannie Schaft

tekst: Hilda Algra
