Graciano Lopez Jaena

Kinikilala si Graciano Lopez Jaena (Gras·yá·no Ló·pez Háy·na) bilang isang lider ng kilusang repormista, manunulat, peryodista, at orador. Maraming historyador ang kumikilala sa kaniya bilang isa sa “tungkong kalan” o triumvirate ng Kilusang Propaganda, kasama sina Jose Rizal at Marcelo H. del Pilar.
Isinilang siyá sa Jaro, Iloilo noong 18 Disyembre kina Placido Lopez at Maria Jacobo Jaena. (Kayâ dapat na “Graciano Jaena Lopez” o “Graciano Lopez y Jaena” ang pagsulat sa buong pangalan niya.) Pumasok siyá sa seminaryo ng Iloilo at nag-ambisyong maging doktor. Sinubukan niyang pumasok sa Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas ngunit hindi pinahintulan sapagkat walang handog na BachillerenArtes ang kaniyang seminaryo. Nabigyan siyá ng pagkakataóng matuto sa ospital ng San Juan de Dios, ngunit kinailangang bumalik sa Iloilo dahil sa kagipitang pinansiyal.

Graciano Lopez Jaena, Iloilo Radical
Years back, I visited the Ateneo Barcelones, which Lopez Jaena frequented to study and give speeches. “Ateneo” means a cultural center, an association, a library, an archive. Located near the Ramblas, the famed boulevard in the city’s center, the Ateneo was the quintessential gentlemen’s library with long study desks with their own lamps, book-lined walls, cushioned chairs, and windows with a marvelous view of the garden. The scholarly setting surely must have inspired Lopez Jaena to research lengthily and improve on his oratorical skills. The Barcelones, a somewhat stuffy library, must have contrasted with his appearance. Jose Alejandrino, a fellow Filipino who was studying in Belgium, encountered the orator and described him as “the personification of slovenliness.”
Lopez Jaena got away with his slovenliness by prefacing his talks with “his obscure and unknown name, a stranger among you with a physiognomy denoting the character of far-away lands, belonging to a race distinct from yours, speaking a language different from yours, as my accent reveals.” Alejandrino added that the orator "looked frail, a stutterer, with a very pronounced Bi

Isang tinitingalang propagandista, si Graciano Lopez Jaena ay lalong kilala sa tawag na "Prinsipe ng mga Orador."
Ipinanganak siya sa Jaro, Iloilo noong Disyembre 18, Mga magulang niya sina Placido Lopez at Maria Jacob.
Unang nag-aral si Graciano sa Colegio Provincial ng Jaro. Batang-bata pa lang ay kinakitaan na siya ng katalinuhan at kabibuhan ng kaniyang gurong si Padre Francisco Jayme. Tinapos niya ang antas sekundarya sa Seminario de San Vicente Ferrer. Sa nasabing paaralan, tinanghal siya bilang Pinakamahusay na Estudyante sa Teolohiya.
Inakala ng mga magulang ni Graciano na pagpapari ang papasukin niyang kurso. Nagkamali sila sapagkat inspirado siyang maging doktor. Sa kakulangan ng salaping itutustos, napilitan siyang mag-aprentis sa San Juan De Dios Hospital. Sa pagtulung-tulong sa mga doktor, natutuhan niya ang panggagamot sa mga simpleng karamdaman. Sa pagbabalik niya sa lalawigan, kahit bawal ay nanggamot siya ng iba't ibang sakit ng mga kababayan.
