Female serial killers comprise less than 20 percent of all serial killers, according to Psychology Today, and they are very different than their male counterparts.
When the general public thinks of female serial killers, they typically think of Aileen Wuornos, arguably the most infamous female serial killer in contemporary times. She was a highway prostitute who shot and killed seven men in Florida between and Wuornos had alleged that the victims either raped or attempted to rape her. Multiple documentaries were made about her, in addition to the award-winning Hollywood blockbuster starring Charlize Theron Monster.

But before Wuornos, most people believed that female serial killers didn’t exist. Not even the FBI. In , according to Psychology Today, a member of the FBI stated outright at a conference that there are no female serial killers, period.

The differences between male and female serial killers
How male and female serial killers differ
In what's set to be something of a groundbreaking new documentary series, some of the world's foremost forensic psychologists and psychiatrists share their insights into the unique psychologies of some of history's most notorious murderers. The series, exclusive to Crime+Investigation, is called Making a Monster and it delves deep into just what creates the uniquely barbaric mindset of a serial killer.
Motive
Perhaps the biggest contrast between the two sexes when it comes to repeat murderers is motivation.
The single biggest driver for male serial killers is sexual compulsion. That’s not to say that all male serial murderers rape their victims, far from it. While there is considerable public interest in serial killers, Harrison said there has been little research on these crimes, possibly because serial killers are relat
