Ossip Zadkine was a relentless, unclassifiable and prolific artist. We can today count more than  sculptures and a large number of works on paper,  gouaches and drawings as well as lithographs and etchings. The exhibition of his works in his Parisian studio of the rue Rousselet on May 20th , marks the beginning of a long series of shows, including more than solo exhibitions during his lifetime, in Europe but also in the United States and in Japan.

Zadkine lived in Belarus (in Vitebsk, his birthplace), in England (Sunderland and London), in France (Paris, Bruniquel and Les Arques), during the First World War he enlisted voluntarily and was posted to the Russian ambulance corps in Champagne in and during the Second World War he fled to New York (October – September ). He also travelled to many places: Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Japan, America, amongst others. Zadkine collaborated with many people on diverse occasions, with architects (Adrien Blomme, Joseph André, Hugh Maaskant), decorators (Marc du Plantier, André Groult), poets (Claude Aveline, Robert Ganzo, Pierre Béarn …) and was close to important individuals

Ossip Zadkine was born in Vitebsk, Belarus on 14 July In his parents sent him to his mother's northern English homeland. He called himself Joe Zadkine until After attending the polytechnic and the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, the young artist went to Paris in There, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts which he quits again soon after in order to work as freelance artist.
In he took part in the "Salon des Indépendants" for the first time and one year later joined the cubists. World war I left its traces in his person and his work. He found initial fame in Belgium and Holland, later in France, England, and America. Already during the s retrospective exhibitions of his work took place.
In he fled to the United States. He worked in New York, Arizona and North Carolina. Ossip Zadkine only returned to the liberated Paris in , and worked as lecturer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière from to

Raised on the banks of the Duina, on the edge of deep pine forests, the taste and need to "draw everything and at any time" soon became apparent to the young Ossip Zadkine. His work is characterized by the alternation and evolutionary return of themes and forms that explore artistic trends without ever stopping and really becoming part of them.

In , he left his native plains and trained at London's Regent Street Polytechnicum. When he was not in the British Museum, he decorated and carved in the East End to earn a living, and sculpted in his spare time. In , his father sent him to Paris. The discovery of Egyptian sculpture in the Louvre, the delight of his friendships with Amadeo Modigliani, Alexander Archipenko, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, persuaded him to "seek life in the simplification or accentuation" of forms. This artistic postulate is evident in the entirety of his work. Zadkin became part of the primitivist movement through his use of direct size and volumes at the rigour of geometry. Ossip Zadkine naît le 4 juillet à Vitebsk, aujourd’hui en Biélorussie. Son père, Ephime Zadkine, enseigne le grec et le latin au séminaire de Smolensk et sa mère, Sophie Lester, est issue d’une famille écossaise de constructeurs de bateaux, émigrée en Russie au XVIIe siècle.

En , ses parents envoient Zakine à Sunderland, au nord l’Angleterre, chez un certain « oncle John » qui le fait inscrire à l’Art school locale et l’initie à la sculpture sur bois. En , l’adolescent rejoint un ami à Londres sans l’assentiment de son père qui lui coupe les vivres. Il s’inscrit au cours du soir du Regent Street Polytechnicum et passe tous ses dimanches au British Museum. Pour survivre, il se fait embaucher chez des artisans du meuble du quartier East End où il se voit confier des ornements à tailler.
