Sir Leslie Mathew Ward

Sir Leslie Matthew Ward was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1, portraits which were regularly published by Vanity Fair, under the pseudonyms "Spy" and "Drawl". The portraits were produced as watercolours and turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine. These were then usually reproduced on better paper and sold as prints. Such was his influence in the genre that all Vanity Fair caricatures are sometimes referred to as "Spy cartoons" regardless of who the artist actually was.

Later, as he became socially accepted in the society in which he moved to gain access to his subjects, and not wishing to cause offence, his style developed into what he called "characteristic portraits", being less of a caricature and more of an actual portrait of the subject, using realistic body proportions.

Ward was one of eight children of artists Edward Matthew Ward a

Fortunately for posterity, the effort failed:

Leslie's reluctance to continue studying architecture led to aconfrontation with his father in which was resolved through theintervention of W. P. Frith and Frith’s subsequent offer to apprenticethe young Ward. Two years later another artist and friend of the family, John Millais, submitted some of Ward’s sketches to Thomas Gibson Bowles who, in early , was searching for a caricaturist to replace Pellegrini after one of Pellegrini’s many departures. Bowles wasfavourably impressed with Ward’s work and hired him. On 1 March, Leslie Ward’s first caricature, "Old Bones," Dr Richard Owen, zoologist and superintendent of the natural history department of theBritish Museum, appeared in Vanity Fair. Wa
