Known around the world as "The Golden Voice of Mali," Salif Keita's unique sound blends the traditional styles of his West African homeland with influences from Cuba, Spain, Portugal, and the Middle East. The instrumentation that accompanies his singing represents a fusion of European and African popular music, ranging from guitar, organ, and sax to traditional African instruments such as the kora, balafon, and djembe, often synthesized and sampled. He has enjoyed a prosperous career not only in his native Mali, where he was awarded the National Order of Guinea, but also in Europe and America, where he became well-known after moving to Paris and collaborating with other African musicians based there.

Salif Keita started his career as a professional singer in , when he became a singer of one of the two big bands in Mali, the Rail Band. The Rail Band, that played in the restaurant of the railway station of Bamako, had already started using Malian musical traditions in addition to Latin classics. In , Salif changed to another big band, les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, which was considered making more modern music. In , the group changed its name to Ambassadeurs Internationaux when key members moved to Abidjan, in order to look for more possibilities for recording and for reaching new (international) audiences.
In , Salif moved to France and started a solo career and his first solo album, the outstanding Soro created a buzz among music fans. The album is seen as innovating because of the, for African music of that decade, particularly high production standards (the album has been produced by François Bréant), and because of the unique mix of beautifully sung African melodies and modern western (electronic) instrumentation. Following albums share the same modernity but lack more and

Born to royal lineage, with ancestral roots going back to Soundjata Keita, the founder of the Malian Empire in , Keita was disowned by his father after announcing his plans to play music. Keita's dreams, however, were too strong to be shattered. Moving to the capitol city of Bamako, in , he was soon playing in nightclubs with one of his brothers. Within two years, he was invited to join the Rail Band. A popular, government-sponsored, group that played regularly at the Buffet Hotel De La Gare, the Rail Band featured influential Malian guitar player Kante Manfila. Keita's soulful singing soon brought the band to a much higher plateau. In , Keita and several members of the Rail Band relocated to Abidjian, the capitol of Cote D'Ivoire (The Ivory Coast). Renamed Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, the group continued to attract attention with their lively fusion of Cuban, Zairean and Malian influences. In , Keita received the prestigious National Order of Guinea from President Ahmed Sekou Toure. Encouraged to pursue a solo career, Keita moved to Paris in Settling in the city's Montreuil section, he found a thrivi
