A force to be reckoned with, Jeanne Houston was born in , which is Year of the Dog in the Chinese Zodiac. Born the youngest of 10 children to Ko and Riku Wakatsuki, Jeanne grew up in the Los Angeles area until the age of seven. In , her entire family was forced by the Federal Government to move to the Manzanar War Relocation Authority Center, a concentration camp that during World War II detained ethnic Japanese, the majority of whom were U.S. citizens. After the war, the family moved back to Long Beach and eventually relocated to the Bay Area where Jeanne graduated from James Lick High School in San Jose. Three decades after its original publication, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston's Farewell to Manzanar--coauthored with her husband, novelist James D. Houston--is as relevant as when it first appeared. With over a million copies sold, Houston's description of one family's struggles during the Japanese-American removal and internment during World War II has become part of the curriculum in high schools and colleges around the country. Colors! Seeing the stages of my life as colors. Where did I get such an idea? I trace it back to , when I was twenty-one years old working as a group counselor in a Northern California juvenile detention hall. It was my first full-time job. I was supervising teenage girls brought in for violating probation, running away from home, and sometimes more serious crimes But most often the offense was "incorrigibility.
Jessica T. (fictitious name) was a racial mix of Philippine, Samoan, and French. One of the "incorrigibles," she was brought to the hall for breaking probation or, more precisely, for getting into a fight. Jessica was well-known to the staff at Hillcrest. She was sixteen and, since the age of twelve when she was booked for running away from a foster home, had been a frequent visitor to the hall.

Born on Sept. 26, , in Inglewood, Houston was the last of 10 children born to Ko and Riku Wakatsuki. At the time, Ko was a farmer on the outskirts of Los Angeles. When Houston was two years old, Ko turned to commercial fishing and moved the family to Ocean Park, a predominantly Caucasian, small coastal community whose main attraction was an amusement pier. Houston recalled, “The pier was my nursery school, the amusement attendants my sitters. The neighborhood kids and I spent most of our days there.”
She and her family were among the 10, Japanese Americans held at Manzanar, located in the Owens Valley about north of Los Angeles and now a National Historic Site operated by the National Park Service. After World War II, she studied sociology and journalism at San Jose State University, where she met her future husband, James D. Houston. She pursued graduate work at San Francisco State University and at the Sorbonne in France.
