Ajahn Pasanno: 30 Years a Monk

Fearless Mountain: What was your early religious experience?

Ajahn Pasanno: I was raised in northern Manitoba, miles north of the U.S. border. My religion was Anglican, which is Episcopalian in the U.S. I had a good experience growing up as a Christian. It was a small town and a small church. My family was reasonably devout. My father had grown up in the United Church, and we took religious classes together. It gave me a deep feeling of peace to gaze on these serene figures. I recall asking an adult about them and the only answer I got was “That is the Chinese idea of God.”

About the same time, or a little later, I read in an encylopedia we had at home that Buddhism taught the goal of life was to seek Nirvana, which that old-fashioned British text defined as “a way of becoming happy by ceasing to exist, which is the sort of idea that only an Asiatic could understand.” I remember thinking at the time that there must be more to it than heles
