Ludwig Nommensen, Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen was a pioneer missionary to the Batak people in Sumatra. He was born in Nordstrand in Schleswig, which was then Danish territory. The experience of being able to walk again after a serious injury in an accident motivated Ludwig to become a missionary.

Ludwig Ingwer Nommensen was born in in Schleswig-Holstein (a district long disputed between Denmark and Germany, and at that time Danish). In he began training for missionary work, and in he went as a Lutheran missionary to Sumatra (a large island in western Indonesia, south of the Malay Peninsula), where he worked in the interior among the Bataks, a people previously untouched by either Islam or Christianity. (Note that Islam is widespread in Indonesia and has outposts as far east as the Philippines.) After some initial troubles, the mission began to succeed, with the conversion of several tribal chiefs and their followers. By there were Batak Christians. Nommensen translated the New Testament into Batak by He undertook to preach the Gospel without replacing the native culture by a European one, and to develop native Church leaders and a native order of worship. Nommensen died on 23 May The Christian community he had planted grew and prospered. Born in Nordstrand, Schleswig, then a Danish territory, Nommensen graduated from the Rhenish Mission Seminary, Wuppertal, Germany, and went to Sumatra, Indonesia (then the Netherland’s East Indies), arriving there in as a missionary of the Rhenish Mission Society. He settled among the independent Toba Batak in the Silindung Valley and baptized the first converts in The chief, Pontas Lumbantobing, became his friend and supported the mission. Together with P.H. Johannsen and A. Mohri, Nommensen withstood the opposition of the local datu priests. Church rulers and a common order of worship were drawn up in In he drafted a constitution to organize the growing Christian movement as a “people’s church.” In he moved north, pioneering in the Lake Toba region, and some years later he expanded the work to the Simelungun Batak. He consolidated the work by establishing advanced schools, hospitals, and a theological seminary.
