Dr. Bhagvan Das
Dr. Bhagvan Das was an illustrious personality from the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. His contributions to social reform movement, national education, and the political aspects of the Indian freedom struggle are especially noteworthy. Dr. Das distinguished himself through his intellectual caliber and industrious nature from his student days. He joined Government Service as Tehsildar in , at the age of However, he resigned from service in , and began working with Annie Besant to work for national education and the revival of Indian culture. He was involved in the establishment of the Central Hindu College in in Varanasi and was one of the driving forces along with Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University in He was also closely associated with the political developments of the time. He served as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Political Conference in and joined the Indian National Congress in the same year. He was also actively involved in the Non-Cooperation Movement called by Mahatma Gandhi.
