Baruj salinas biography of mahatma

Collection: Baruj Salinas

Salinas is quoted as saying: "Because of my connection and collaboration with poets and writers such as María Zambrano, José Angel Valente, Pere Gimferrer, and Michel Butor, I developed a concept of the language of the clouds. This consisted basically of a grey background with white as the main color of my palette–the white symbolizing clouds. I also used pictograms, ideograms, and strange alphabets like the Greek alphabet, the Hebrew alphabet, and the Iberian alphabet". On another occasion Salinas was quoted as follows: "To me, painting is not work. It is something that transcends labor. I love to be in my studio painting because I forget about everything else. I’m so concentrated on it that it is like a meditation. I concentrate on what I’m doing and I enjoy it while I’m doing it. I enjoy seeing a wide space being developed into something that has life. It’s always been the most important thing in my life. And architecture was never so.”

The American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, in collaboration with the Cuban Legacy Gallery, MDC Special Collections at Miami Dade College, presents Baruj Salinas: –, a thematic survey of the acclaimed Miami-based Cuban American painter’s abstract work, which spans a half century of his artistic career. Salinas had trained and worked as an architect, but has created abstract works in a gestural, expressionist style since the early s. Influenced by philosophy, music, and literature, he has also explored a lifelong interest in cosmology in his art. By the early s, he had begun engaging themes of origins—of life or of the universe—on both microcosmic and macrocosmic scales. Living in Barcelona during the s, he associated with Spanish painters, including Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies, and in embarked upon a large series of works based on clouds. Works from El lenguaje de las nubes (The Language of the Clouds) from –80 evince the artist’s introduction into his work of expansive areas of white, which often represents a multivalent emptiness, and the appearance of words and letters in various real or imagined alphabets. Salinas has continued to employ both of these devices and address the

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Baruj Salinas &#; beloved friend and extraordinary artist and person. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him will remember him for his warmth, his engaging eyes and smile, and his infinite intellectual curiosity. He is considered one of the most important abstract painters in Cuban art.

Like the generation of vanguard painters that came before him, Salinas traveled to Europe and became active in the art scene in Barcelona, where he lived from through It was there that Salinas developed his own abstract visual language, characterized by an explosive energy and movement, which he continued to develop in Miami where he permanently settled. The CHC is privileged to count among its holdings materials by the artist that include original drawings, serigraphs, publications, and artists’ books.

Among our most treasured artists’ books is Salinas’ The Torah Project, a commissioned work from for which the artist created a series of drawings interpreting the Torah’s Five Books of Moses. The book includes twenty-seven lithographs printed from Salinas’ original drawings, as well
