The Young Chemist
Four pale horsemen at dawn rode in from the East. They were scouts from the Red Army vanguard, chasing the invaders all the way back to Germany. It was the 27th of January, Behind the barbed wire, they found 9, prisoners left to die by the SS. That place was called Auschwitz.
Among the survivors, a young Italian.
He had been arrested because he was a resistance fighter. He was deported because he was a Jew. He survived because he was a chemist.
His name was Primo Levi, and he would become one of the most important writers of the 20th Century.
Primo Levi was born in Turin, Northern Italy, on July 31, , to a Jewish family of Spanish and French descent. His parents, Ester and Cesare, had married just the year before. Cesare was an extroverted and well-read person with a passion for science.
Primo described his dad as ‘an excellent person, but one who was not suited to a father’s career’.
Nonetheless, Primo inherited from Cesare a love for reading and for science. Both men held a tendency to explore the ‘whys’ of life.
In , Ester and Cesare welcomed their second child, Anna Maria.
Primo would always be very close to his sister. In fact, she was the only
It was when a very young Edith Eger met Victor Frankl () in the United States, another of the survivors of the Nazi Holocaust and author of the impressive Man’s Search for Meaning, an authentic spiritual search for the meaning of life before an immense and immeasurable pain. Eger had also lived through the Nazi horror and had survived various concentration camps; among them, Auschwitz, where she witnessed how her mother was taken to the gas chamber.
Frankl became her mentor and, under his guidance, Edith began to regain meaning in her life. With a degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, she has dedicated her entire existence to helping others and preventing them from falling into that deep well into which victims plunge. According to Edith Eger, it is not about “overcoming”, but about “accepting”. In today’s article we review the life of the Nazi Holocaust survivor, post-traumatic stress specialist, Edith Eger.
Brief biography of Edith Eger, the psychologist who survived Auschwitz

8 Famous Holocaust Survivors Who Shared Their Stories of Resilience
World War II exposed some of the darkest aspects of mankind when Nazi Germany systematically exterminated 6 million European Jews. From pograms and gas chambers to mass shootings and concentration camps, the Holocaust left a devastating stain on Germany and displaced an incredible number of Jews, prisoners of war, and other discriminated groups who were forced to rebuild their lives elsewhere. Many Holocaust survivors have since made their mark on the world.
After enduring horror and heartbreak, famous Holocaust survivors like Otto Frank, Dr. Ruth, and Elie Weisel have demonstrated strength and resilience. In some cases, that has meant sharing stories from the Holocaust. Other survivors have changed the course of history through their work in criminal justice, politics, and art.

'I was 90% dead': Henri's story of surviving Auschwitz
BBC News, Brussels
Henri Kichka knows there will be a price to pay for telling his story: sleepless nights where the horrors of the past seep back into the present.
But he knows the story must be told. Henri is one of the dwindling handful of men and women who survived Auschwitz.
The death camp the Nazis built in occupied southern Poland during World War Two was, another survivor once told me, like a crack in the surface of the Earth through which hell could be seen. And a crack in the surface of our common humanity through which could be seen our capacity for enduring suffering - and inflicting it.
Ask Henri how he lived through it and his answer is simple: "You did not live through Auschwitz. The place itself is death," he tells the BBC, 75 years after it was liberated.
You had no name in the camp - just a number tattooed on to your forearm.
There is a chilling moment when Henri suddenly barks out his own number - - in German as he was required to when challenged by the guards.
