Százhúsz évvel ezelőtt, április én született Márai Sándor író, költő, esszéista. A XX. századi magyar irodalom egyik legmeghatározóbb alakja igazi világpolgár volt: számos európai országban, valamint a tengerentúl is élt és alkotott. Egy belső késztetés folyton egyik városból a másikba hajtotta, így kevés helyen érezte otthon magát. Budapest egy volt azok közül a városok közül, amelyhez szoros érzelmi szálak fűzték.

Az első találkozás
Márai Sándor márai Grosschmid Sándor Károly Henrik néven látta meg a napvilágot Kassán. Első meghatározó élménye Budapesttel kapcsolatban a magány volt. Vidéki fiúként nem tudott, illetve nem is akart beilleszkedni a Budapesti Királyi Egyetemi Katolikus Gimnázium közösségébe. A bentlakásos intézetben úgy érezte magát, mint egy fegyházban, így nem csoda, hogy egy év után boldogan tért vissza szülőföldjére.

Sándor Márai was born in the city of Kassa in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Slovakia) on April 11, , in a Hungarian family of German lineage. His father, Géza Grosschmid, was a jurist and after World War I, he was Kassa&#;s elected representative in the Czechoslovak legislature. Márai studied in Kassa, Eperjes and Budapest. After secondary school, he enrolled at Péter Pázmány University to study literature and the humanities and began to publish literary criticism and poems. The end of World War I ushered in a difficult period in Hungarian history. The Peace Treaty of Versailles reduced Hungary&#;s territories by about two thirds. Its Northern region where Kassa was located was annexed by the newly formed state of Czechoslovakia. First a center left republican government took power and then a short-lived Communist dictatorship ruled the country. The forces that defeated the Communists installed a counterrevolutionary and anti-Semitic government. In , Márai left the country and continued his career in journalism in Germany. Sándor Márai (originally Sándor Károly Henrik Grosschmied de Mára) was a Hungarian writer and journalist.
He was born in the city of Kassa in Austria-Hungary (now Košice in Slovakia) to an old family of Saxon origin who had mixed with magyars through the centuries. Through his father he was a relative of the Ország-family. In his early years, Márai travelled to and lived in Frankfurt, Berlin, and Paris and briefly considered writing in German, but eventually chose his mother language, Hungarian, for his writings. He settled in Krisztinaváros, Budapest, in In the s, he gained prominence with a precise and clear realist style. He was the first person to write reviews of the work of Kafka.
