By Ritu BhivaApril 11, commentsमहात्मा ज्योतिबा फुले (Mahatma Jyotiba Rao Phule) का जन्म 11 अप्रैल को महाराष्ट्र के सतारा जिले में शूद्र वर्ण की 'माली' जाति में हुआ था। जिन्हें ‘मनुस्मृति’ के विधान के हिसाब से न शिक्षा प्राप्त करने की आजादी थी और न अपनी मर्जी का पेशा चुनने की। लेकिन वक्त बदल चुका था। ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी (East India Company) द्वारा भारत में ‘दासता उन्मूलन अधिनियम’ और मैकाले द्वारा प्रस्तुत ‘मिनिट्स ऑन एजुकेशन’ () लागू किये जा चुके थे। यह मनुस्मृति-आधारित सामाजिक व्यवस्था को बदलने वाली एक महान पहल थी जिसमें जॉन स्टुअर्ट मिल की उल्लेखनीय भूमिका रही।
में मात्र 21 वर्ष की अवस्था में उन्होंने सार्वजनिक जीवन में प्रवेश किया। वर्ष में उनका विवाह मात्र 9 वर्ष की सावित्रीबाई फुले (Savitribai Phule) से हुआ। वे पढ़ना चाहती थीं। परंतु उन दिनों लड़कियों को पढ़ाने का चलन नहीं था। शिक्षा के प्रति पत्नी की ललक देख जोतीराव फुले ने उन्हें पढ़ाना शुरू कर दिया। लोगों ने उनका विरोध किया। परंतु फुले अड़े रहे। तीन वर्षों में पति-पत्नी ने 18 स्कूलों की स्थापना की। उनमें से तीन स्कूल लड़कियों के लिए थे।
