Marcus Aurelius, or Marcus Aurelius Antonius Augustus, called the Philosopher, was a Roman emperor from to AD. He was the leader of the ancient Roman Empire and his adoptive brother Lucius Verus until the death of Lucius in AD. Thus, he was the fifth of the Five Good Emperors. Moreover, Marcus Aurelius was the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of peace and stability for the Empire.

Marcus Aurelius (born A.D. , ruled ) was the adopted son of Antonius Pius. He is regarded as a reflective philosopher-emperor and the last of the good emperors. He took the throne at a time when Rome's shortcomings and vulnerability were becoming apparent. The rich were hopelessly decadent, the middle class was disappearing, labor was performed mostly by slaves, and threats were present in the north and the east.
Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus succeeded the emperor Antoninus Pius in , (as joint emperor with adoptive brother Lucius Verus). He ruled alone from He spent much of his reign in putting down various rebellions, and was a persecutor of Christians. His fame rest, above all, on his Meditations, a series of reflections, strongly influenced by Epictetus, which represent a Stoic outlook on life. He died in and was succeed by his natural son, thus ending the period of the adoptive emperors.

Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was born on April 26, , in Rome, Italy. Known for his philosophical interests, Aurelius was one of the most respected emperors in Roman history. He was born into a wealthy and politically prominent family. Growing up, Aurelius was a dedicated student, learning Latin and Greek. But his greatest intellectual interest was Stoicism, a philosophy that emphasized fate, reason and self-restraint. Discourses, written by a former slave and Stoic philosopher Epictetus, had a great deal of influence over Marcus Aurelius. His serious and hard-working nature was even noticed by Emperor Hadrian.
