Years of training, weeks of acclimatization, untold hours of aching muscles and heaving lungs, scores of prayers for a few hours' respite from Mother Nature's relentless fury.

All that was in the past for Joby Ogwyn '97 on May 12, , when he stood at the summit of Mount Everest and looked down at the rest of the world. He was 24 years old and, at that moment, he became the youngest American to conquer Everest.

At that moment, it was 9 in the morning and he enjoyed "as perfect a day as you could possibly hope for at that altitude." Above: blue skies and wispy white clouds. Below: a picture postcard view of the majestic Himalayas, straddling China and Nepal, so awesome a sight that their treacherous challenges might be pushed into the background, if only for a moment.

For most adventurers, reaching the summit of Mount Everest is the ultimate achievement. For Joby Ogwyn, it will be only the starting point.

After scaling the world’s tallest mountain, he intends to jump off it and fly to the ground wearing a nylon wing-suit.

The death-defying stunt will be broadcast live on television across the globe in May, when viewers will see Mr Ogwyn say a quick prayer, take a few sucks from an oxygen mask and throw himself into the void.

    Career

    He summited Mount Kilimanjaro when he was just When he first summited Mount Everest in , he was at the time the youngest American to do southern He is a top speed climber.

    In Ogwyn beat the speed ascent record of an 8, meter peak at the Tibetan peak Cho Oyu.

    Ogwyn planned to jump off Mountain. Everest in a wing suit in May , but after an avalanche on Everest&#;s lower slopes during the month of April, causing the deaths of 16 Sherpa guides, the jump was cancelled.
