Seit der Kritik, die von der Arcadia gegen das zeitgenössische «dramma per musica» vorgebracht wurde, lastet über der Oper des ausgehenden I 7. Jahrhunderts das Verdikt des Ungeordneten und Unmäßigen. Trotz des Wohlwollens, das die Oper jenes Jahrhunderts seit einiger Zeit in der Forschung genießt, hat sich das Urteil im Kern bis heute gehalten. Wo die Oper des ausgehenden Jahrhunderts zum Gegenstand der Forschung gemacht wird, geschieht dies-offen oder verdeckt-meist unter einer entwicklungsgeschichtlichen Perspektive, die sich an Denkmustern orientiert, die am Musiktheater des Jahrhunderts gewonnen sind. Unter diesem Blickwinkel erscheint die Oper um zwangsläufig als etwas Rohes und Unfertiges, etwas allenfalls Im-Werden-Begriffenes, das erst nach der <Erlösung> durch die <Reform> Zenos und seiner Mitstreiter den Weg zu einer höheren dramatischen Daseinsform findet. La tesi che individua nella musica il fattore fondante e costitutivo di quel peculiare tipo di dramma che è l'opera italiana affida alla drammaturgia musicale il compito di definire quali rapporti intercorrano di volta in volta tra la musica e gli altri fattori in essa convergenti: l'intreccio, la struttura del dramma, la costellazione dei personaggi, l'azione scenica, la spettacolarità. In un testo che è annoverato tra i grandi classici della letteratura musicologica contemporanea, Carl Dahlhaus dimostra che il riconoscimento della dignità intellettuale dell'opera in musica non può avvenire sovrapponendole dei modelli di lettura esterni, bensì riconoscendo l'effettivo contenuto estetico che, secolo dopo secolo, essa ha saputo costruire e comunicare al suo pubblico. Ma nel condurre il lettore a questa conclusione, lo sottopone altresì a un fuoco d'artificio di annotazioni collaterali, pensieri fuggitivi e illuminazioni parentetiche che fanno di questo saggio una fonte inesauribile di stupore e piacere intellettuale.
