In the notes to Flight Animals, Bronwyn Lea informs her readers that the term is used to indicate not only those animals that can fly, but also those animals that, when confronted with danger, flee. In this, her debut collection of poetry, Lea uses the term ‘flight animals’ (in both its senses) as a controlling metaphor with great success. In language that is rich and sensuous, Lea explores the complexities of attachment and detachment, desire and distance, movement and stasis. Her voice ranges from reverent to wry as each poem in turn contemplates the nature of human nature, whether we are, after all, flight animals ourselves.
Movement and intimacy are the two predominant themes of Flight Animals. At their points of intersection, Lea finds the fight-or-flight moment that most defines the character of Lea&#;s speaker. She characterizes herself as ‘restless’ and as someone ‘who won&#;t be pinned’ (‘California Morning’). Elsewhere, she considers her place as a woman ‘schooled/in ricochet’ who comes to understand ‘It is the movement more than the man/that I love’ (‘Antipodes’). Bronwyn Lea's research interests include contemporary Australian and American poetry, creative writing and authorship, and book cultures. Since she has advised 46 postgraduate students to successful completion in the disciplines of creative writing and literary studies.

Bronwyn is the author of four books of poems: Flight Animals; The Wooden Cat and Other Poems; The Other Way Out; and The Deep North: Selected Poems. Her poems are widely anthologised, appearing most recently in Thirty Australian Poets, Australian Poetry Since , Sixty Classic Australian Poems, and The Penguin Anthology of Australian Poetry. As a literary critic, she reviews poetry, fiction and non-fiction for Australian Book Review, The Australian, and other literary pages. Bronwyn Lea grew up in Queensland and Papua New Guinea. She lived in California for twelve years and studied at the California State University in San Diego. After her return to Brisbane in she studied for an MA (Creative Writing) at the University of Queensland where she now lectures in Poetics and Narrative.
She was poetry editor at the University of Queensland Press and the series editor, with Martin Duwell, of the annual Best Australian Poetry anthology (UQP), between Her own poetic work has been widely published, anthologised, and translated into several languages.
Lea's research interests include narrative, poetics, academic and professional writing, creative non-fiction, publishing and editing. In , Lea was appointed Head of School, the School of Communication and Arts, The University of Queensland. She is also a Board Director for UPLIT, which delivers the Brisbane Writers Festival, Word Play, Love YA and a number of regional literary initiatives.
