Antigone defies the king's edict
In the aftermath of a brutal civil war, Antigone, daughter of Oedipus, faces a moral dilemma. Her brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, have killed each other in battle. Creon, the new king of Thebes, decrees that Eteocles will be honored, but Polynices, deemed a traitor, will be left unburied. Antigone, driven by familial duty and divine law, resolves to defy Creon's edict and bury her brother, believing that the gods' laws supersede those of man. Her sister Ismene, fearful of the consequences, refuses to help, highlighting the tension between personal conviction and societal obedience.
The King's Unyielding Decree

Creon, determined to establish his authority, insists on the importance of law and order. He believes that allowing Polynices a proper burial would undermine his rule and set a dangerous precedent. His decree is absolute, and he warns that anyone who disobeys will face death. Creon's rigid adherence to his own laws reveals his hubris and foreshadows the tragic events to come. The time of his death is fixed by the allusions to it in the Frogs of Aristophanes and in the Muses, a lost play of Phrynichus, the comic poet, which were both produced in B.C., shortly before the capture of Athens. And the legend which implies that Lysander allowed him funeral honors is one of those which, like the story of Alexander and Pindar&#;s house at Thebes, we can at least wish to be founded on fact, though we should probably substitute Agis for Lysander.
Apart from tragic victories, the event of Sophocles&#; life most fully authenticated is his appointment at the age of fifty-five as one of the generals who served with Pericles in the Samian War ( B.C.). Conjecture has been rife as to the possibility of his here improving acquaintance with Herodotus, whom he probably met some years earlier at Athens. But the distich quoted by Plutarch—
Ὠιδὴν Ἡροδότῳ τεῦξεν Σοφοκλής ἐτέων ὢν
Πέντ’ ἐπὶ πεντήκοντα—
is a slight ground on which to reject the stronger tradition according to which Herodotus was ere this established at Thurii; and the coincidences in their writings may be accounted for by their having drawn from a common source.

The Greek playwrite, Sophocles, wrote many exceptional plays. One of these is Antigone. The play is named after Oedipus&#;s daughter, although it is primarily about her Uncle Creon. Creon is the focal point and it is his misjudgment and pride that causes his downfall. Yet, the title of this story is still Antigone. This is because it is her actions that lead to Creon&#;s fall. She is the catalyst for the chain reactions that occur in the play. All Antigone wants to do is give her brother, Polynices, a proper burial. But King Creon says that burying Polynices was illegal and punishable with death. He calls Polynices a traitor to Thebes because he had fought on the opposite side. Yet, Antigone loves her brother dearly and did indeed bury him. She did not deny anything saying that, &#;even if I die in the act, that death will be a glory&#; (63). When Creon found out Antigone had buried Polynices, he sentenced her to death. Creon was so convinced that a traitor must not have a proper burial that nothing would change his mind. Antigone is both the daughter and the sister of Oedipus (since he married his own mother). Now that Oedipus and his brothers are dead, Antigone and Ismene are the last of the Labdacus family. After her father went into exile, Antigone and her sister were raised in the house of Creon. Her brothers Polyneices and Eteocles were casualties in a brutal war for power, each brother dying by the other's hand. Creon has declared that Eteocles will be honored with burial since he was a defender of Thebes, while Polyneices' body is left to the vultures and dogs. It is this edict that drives Antigone to defy the state, since she believes her brother Polyneices deserves the same treatment as Eteocles. Some critics see Antigone as too self-righteous, even alienating, but others claim her as a seminal feminist, determined to do what is right even in defiance of patriarchal law.
