Aleksandr Mijáilovich Bútlerov, químico ruso, nació en Chístopol, Kazán, Imperio Ruso, el 15 de septiembre de Hijo de un oficial retirado vivió su infancia en el pueblo paterno, Bútlerovka. Estudió la secundaria en Kazán donde aprendió francés, y luego en la Universidad de Kazán, graduándose en En se doctoró en química y aprobó el examen para una cátedra.
Sus investigaciones fundamentales, teóricas y experimentales, se enfocaron en la química estructural, a raíz del viaje () en que colaboró con la Sociedad Química de París, conoció a químicos eminentes como Kekulé y Erlenmeyer. Trabajó en el laboratorio de Wurtz donde, por primera vez, obtuvo la hexametilentetramina (urotropina) y transformó un polímero de formaldehído en una sustancia sacarífera (reacción Formosa).

Es entonces cuando Bútlerov expone “Sobre la estructura química de las sustancias” (), donde determina que dicha estructura dependerá del número, la valencia y, además, de la disposición atómica, impulsando avances especialmente en tautomería.
